J. Prentis high class fruiterer & greengrocer |
John Prentis’ great-great Grandfather started in business in 1889 in Ilford, Essex. The business remained in Essex until 1983 when his grandfather retired.
John’s father opened the first Broadstairs shop in 1980 at no. 59 High Street (now Bello’s Coffee Bar). He moved the business to its present location in 1991 – no. 31 High Street.
It is very much a family business with John’s parents still working in the shop. The business is run by John and his brother Chris, and their nephew, Sam, now works in the shop at weekends, making him the sixth generation to do so.
John’s particular role is the buying, sourcing produce locally where possible, with the remainder coming from New Covent Garden, where he goes four nights a week.
John’s brother runs the shop with an excellent team of staff. His brother-in-law, James, is the overnight driver, taking the lorry to London. He is also the main delivery man!
Prentis is committed to retailing in the High Street, but in addition, there is a strong catering arm to the business, delivering six days a week throughout Thanet to catering establishments and retail customers.
So if you are passing, do pop in and experience the passion for produce, and traditional levels of service, and if you catch John’s father, just chat about the old days.
You can be assured of a warm welcome!
